The original Body as a Canvas Artwork 2019 is a film still from a self-filmed and photographed performance. Significantly, I explored the domestic and personal nature of ownership of my Body, which I documented using my iPhone.
The images are authentic (no digital changes), and I use my Body as the Canvas for the work. I was researching and inspired by painter Jenny Saville alongside photographer icon Cindy Sherman. I wanted to explore the materiality of the Body in painting and documentation, of an actual illness, real extreme weight loss and all the socially constructed weight these issues place upon our bodies. *
The significance of using the iPhone iterates the creative methods that can be adopted when working in a domestic setting of a home; at the time, I was studying for a BA (Hons) in Fine Art via distance learning and living in an art Council Priority Place with limited access to Art facilities. I later received a first-class BA in Fine Art with honours. I invented methods and solutions throughout my degree to overcome my situation. Learning and studying this way wasn't easy, and I nearly gave up so many times.
This work also speaks to the many women artists who work at their Kitchen table whilst caring for children or a family, often excluded from the main art world/scene.
The exhibition Women in Revolt at the Tate Modern in 2023 further iterated this subject of the exclusion of Women Artists, often working in domestic settings.
*The subject shows a personal narrative of my Body changing through drastic weight loss. I lost ten stone in weight through Bariatric Surgery (Medical Surgery) and this was film at 18 months post surgery when my weight loss was at its highest.
